GDIP Second DC - foreground frame - Set Transparent

22 Jan 2019, 18:42

IsNull explained a method using GDIP to attached a second DC (foreground frame) to a base (background) GUI. It is perfect in every respect excepting that I do not know how to make the second DC (foreground frame) transparent. Basically I was hoping for a virtual glass canvas over the underlying GUI that I could draw shapes on. Hope that makes sense and any guidance is appreciated.

Code: Select all

If ( !pToken := Gdip_Startup() )
{

; We could draw on this DC directly, but its better and more comfortable to create a
; 2nd DC, (as a frame) to draw on.
; So, If we want to show our Frame in the GUI, we have to copy (BitBlt) our Frame DC
; over the Window DC. This is done in the DRAW_SCENE Sub.

; This is our frame
hdc                                                            := CreateCompatibleDC()

;some brushes

pBGREEN                                                        := Gdip_BrushCreateSolid(0xff00FF00)

; Now we draw on our Frame:
Gdip_FillRectangle( G , pBGREEN , 16 , 16 , 64 , 16 )

; Ok, the frame is now ready, but the user can't see anything:
; because we have to BitBlt() this frame to our Window DC -
; actually, this is often done with a settimer:

SetTimer , DRAW_SCENE , 20

return

BTN1_CLICK:
Gdip_FillRectangle( G , pBWHITE , 96 , 16 , 64 , 16 )
return

;draws the scene
DRAW_SCENE:
BitBlt( hdc_WINDOW , 8 , 8 , dibW , dibH , hdc , 0 , 0 )                                           ; position of the GDI Image in the GUI
return

I use my own wrapper functions so it won't look exactly as you may be accustomed to, but here are the functions to look at.

Code: Select all

Layered_Window_SetUp(Smoothing,Window_X,Window_Y,Window_W,Window_H,Window_Name:=1,Window_Options:="")
	{
		Layered:={}
		Layered.W:=Window_W
		Layered.H:=Window_H
		Layered.X:=Window_X
		Layered.Y:=Window_Y
		Layered.Name:=Window_Name
		Layered.Options:=Window_Options
		Layered.Token:=Gdip_Startup()
		Create_Layered_GUI(Layered)
		Layered.hwnd:=winExist()
		Layered.hbm := CreateDIBSection(Window_W,Window_H)
		Layered.hdc := CreateCompatibleDC()
		Layered.obm := SelectObject(Layered.hdc,Layered.hbm)
		Layered.G := Gdip_GraphicsFromHDC(Layered.hdc)
		Gdip_SetSmoothingMode(Layered.G,Smoothing)
		return Layered
	}
	Create_Layered_GUI(Layered)
	{
		Gui,% Layered.Name ": +E0x80000 +LastFound " Layered.Options
		Gui,% Layered.Name ":Show",% "x" Layered.X " y" Layered.Y " w" Layered.W " h" Layered.H " NA"
	}

The main thing you need is to set the child gui with +E0x80000

Re: GDIP Second DC - foreground frame - Set Transparent

@Hellbent … Apologies … This is not the first time that something I am looking for is right under my nose and I can not take advantage of it … It's been days of reading and expirementing to isolate what I posted … Sadly your post is too complicated for me … I did in fact download it and run it but just a black screen and even after staring at it for awhile I have no idea how to proceed … Again, my apologies and thank you for posting this clearly time consuming resolution.

No worries, I know first hand how frustrating picking this stuff up can be, especially without help. So I am more than willing to lend assistance and patience.

Here is the first thing to note. That script combines +E0x80000 and setting a gui as a child. That only works for windows 8+, but it is very effective for drawing to what looks like just a normal gui.

To get that script to show you anything you need to ctrl+ click in it. Once you do you should see a line follow your cursor from where you had first clicked. Then if you press shift it will stop following your cursor.

What this script does isn't the important thing though, it is just a simple example of a gui that you can draw on while still being able to add buttons etc to.

Try running the script again and let me know if this is in the wheelhouse of what you are looking to do. i.e draw stuff on a gui rather than adding pictures (note that you can create shapes and then add them to a normal gui by using bitmaps and the picture gui control, but that has lots of limits).

@Hellbent … Ah yes, ctrl+ and it springs to life then the shift … Thanks for the tip … Actually, I just want to put rectangles over the underlying gui, so, specific shapes as opposed to drawing … I guess you are using the native GDI calls that GDIP simply encapsulates which is cool … At this point I remain hopeful that the second GDIP frame can be made transparent, mostly because I think I can see how to configure it … Again thank you for being so patient and gracious.

I played around with your code and I must say that I have never seen this approach before. I was able to make it look like what you wanted but it's not actually making it transparent.

So this is what I have interpreted from this bitblt function and how your script is working.

Everything in the setup looks to be creating a graphics bitmap, then the bitblt() is taking that bitmap and drawing it to the gui.

The issue seems to be that any part of the grapics bitmap that doesn't have anything drawn to it shows up as Black space on your gui.
Playing around, I see that you can tailor the size of and area of your graphics to be the exact size of the area of the screen that you want to draw shapes to. You can also use the same size that you have now but fill the unused area of your graphics with the same color as your gui background.

The first thing will allow you to only cover the area of your gui that you are actually drawing to, while the second can make it look like you are only covering the area for your shapes.

Don't get bogged down in the code (been testing a few things so it's all over the place), but try running this and see if it is close to what you want

Code: Select all

;~ #SingleInstance,Force

;~ Gui,1:+AlwaysOnTop

;~ return
;~ GuiClose:
;~ *^ESC::
	;~ ExitApp

; https://autohotkey.com/board/topic/48570-putting-gdi-image-onto-a-visible-gui/
; IsNull

#SingleInstance , Force

dibW   := 240
dibH   := 112

If ( !pToken := Gdip_Startup() )
{
  MsgBox , 48 , gdiplus error! , Gdiplus failed to start. Please ensure you have gdiplus on your system!
  ExitApp
}

;First we build our normal GUI
Gui , I:New  , , Base Gui
Gui , I:Color  , Yellow
Gui , I:Margin , 0 , 0
Gui , I:Add  , Button    ,   x0016   y0128       h0020                                 gBTN1_CLICK , Show White Rectangle
Gui , I:Add  , StatusBar

HWND := WinExist( "A" ) ; Get the HWND of our Window

; We could draw on this DC directly, but its better and more comfortable to create a
; 2nd DC, (as a frame) to draw on.
; So, If we want to show our Frame in the GUI, we have to copy (BitBlt) our Frame DC
; over the Window DC. This is done in the DRAW_SCENE Sub.

Re: GDIP Second DC - foreground frame - Set Transparent

@Hellbent ... Downloaded and ran your latest version ... I finally understood that you visually melded the frames using, in this, yellow ... However, the sub frame over the main frame remains "opaque" ... Thank you again for trying but short of the canvas itself going transparent seems like end of this particular road.
