mention feature drop-down list

13 Apr 2019, 04:08

I like to type @person to indicate who I'm referring to. Now I get a drop-down list that keeps interfering with writing/editing a post, to the point where I'm now copying and pasting to Notepad as a go-between to sort out the post. The whole thing is pretty catastrophic. But I applaud the experimentation.

I would scrap the drop-down list. If people want to do a mention notification, which is rarely useful or a good thing, and should probably be discouraged, they should type out the 'mention' code tags manually.

Thanks for reading.

I disagree. If I want to mention a specific person in a topic I don't want to type them out.
Unless ofc we add some sort of name restriction.

Hi jeeswg, I can disable it for you specifically. Would you like that?

- Hahaha that would be cool, go ahead @joedf, thanks.
- Btw, would a feature like the drop-down list slow down the browser, since it needs to generate/store a list of names, plus it has to check for key presses (e.g. Esc to dismiss the drop-down list).
- Also, pages with big posts (scripts/lists) are pretty slow loading, if anything can be done about that. Thanks.

- Thanks. What I like to do is use @ but without causing a notification. I found that a blue box was following me everywhere I typed, and that any time I pressed enter, it would make a mess, overwriting some of what I'd written.
- And that the box would come back when I wanted to edit a post.
- I suspected also possibly some interference with key presses.
- Furthermore, I have a list with various usernames as hotstrings, so don't really need a drop-down list. And I haven't minded copying and pasting the occasional new username. Haha, making me think though, I could write a script to grab the usernames of posters on the current page for convenience ...
- Anyhow, good work @joedf, you developed an interesting feature.

I would like the administrators to examine the use of this feature for abuse. Today I attempted to use it for fincs and was offered options as per the image. It seems that incorporating the 'mention feature' has opened the site to undesirable attacks.

There is a similar case for mentioning lexikos. It would be convenient with a report user button.

Cheers

These users have been banned a while back and are the result of multiple spam attacks over the years.
Up until they haven't bothered anybody. It might make sense to exclude banned users from the mention list.

Thanks for reporting. I've purged many accounts like this one, but there's only so many swearwords and wildcards I can think of :/

The list appears with no regard to where the insertion point (caret) is. It doesn't seem to be 100% consistent, but most times if there is an @-name at the end of a line, the list will repeatedly appear while typing on an entirely different line. For instance, it occurs if I quote the following post and click at any point below the @-name. I confirmed this in Firefox and Chrome.
https://www.autohotkey.com/boards/posting.php?mode=quote&f=76&p=285281

For me, the list is also fairly slow to appear, so I must stop and wait after typing the name for the list to appear (even if I've typed the name in full), allowing me the shortcut to add the bbcode.

Yes, you're right. I've just updated the extension from v1.0.3 to 1.0.4. Let me know if that works, I am no longer experiencing the bug. :+1:

@swagfag You're right. Good catch!
I've changed it to just plain blue now.
