Intro to AutoHotkey Udemy course

09 Jul 2019, 14:32

I recently completed my Intro to AutoHotkey Udemy course.

This course covers the "basics" and is meant for Noobs.

BTW- I purposely left-in the mistakes / errors to help people learn how to troubleshoot. While I love Lynda.com courses, I don't like how they make everything appear "perfect" thus
1) make you feel incompetent when things don't work right and
2) Leave you helpless not learning how to troubleshoot.

Anyway, I hope it helps people learn the basics. Hopefully in a month or two I'll work on some intermediate courses.

I've created a discount code which sells the Intro to AutoHotkey course to forum members for $9.99

Here are some reviews. Currently it has a 4.21 out of 5.

It was value for every penny. I am glad I stumbled on this tutorial that allowed me to have very structured training that otherwise would have been me in a no man's land trying to connect dots having no clue. So yeah, thanks to Joe for being such a good instructor and I wish him best for future tutorials. Cheers. --Amin M.

Great course, I already use AutoHotkey a bit but have learnt a lot, Thanks -- Maurice O.

Nice job Joe. I learned a lot about what is possible with AutoHotkey. The examples and demonstrations were also very helpful. -- Dale W.

So far, so good. Not breaking much new ground here, but it's nice to go over and solidify some things I already knew or thought I knew (or should have known). -- Chris N.

As someone who has been using AutoHotkey (AHK) for a couple years now, I can say that for someone who has just discovered AHK and is new to coding in general, this course is a great place to dip your toes in. Joe doesn't go deep into the intricacies of the topics, but he does provide enough information to get you started on understanding how the different aspects of AHK work and how you could apply this to your scripts. Even if you have been using AHK for a while and haven't done any formal courses on it, this course is a great way to check your knowledge and fill in any gaps that you may have. -- Leigh G.

I'm using AutoHotkey for nearly 17yrs. Joe has created an amazing course and btw is a key contributor at the AutoHotkey-forum. Well done! --Bill S.

I discovered AutoHotkey and used a day to learn about HotStrings through Google searches and program documentation. I scan my paper statements every month before shredding them. Naming them is tedious so a simple script was created. At the end of my day down the rabbit hole with AutoHotkey I discovered this course. My attitude going in was that I may have wasted my money since all of this information was available through Google. Wow, was I wrong. This course distills the essentials from hundreds of pages of online documentation into something that is easily understood. The examples given are clearly explained and illustrated. It would have taken me many frustrating days to learn what is in this course on my own. Great job by the course creators, it's informative and concise, BTW, I am 70 years old with some computer experience. I am a volunteer who updates websites for local, small nonprofits. What I learned in this course will save me many hours of repetitive typing. Well done! -- John K.

This course got me up and running for a task at work! Having never used (or even heard of) this program before I was able to put it to use right away even before finishing the course. -- JT K.

excellent class and very informative. surely improves productivity and make the work on computer exciting and playful. -- Tom M.

Great course! The explanations given are easy to understand and precise. I highly recommend this course. -- Jeff J.[/color][/b]

I thank you. There is very little educational resource on AHK. We find many trainings piece by piece. Sample files and advice from helpful users when we ask for help. The AHK Guide is very difficult for me to understand. For the first time, thanks to this training, I feel that I started learning AHK by understanding the basics with a beautiful curriculum. A good start for novices.

I am trying to use OOP with AHK. I hope you will give us training on this. :)

Hi Joe,

Agreed with hasantr on this; it was very easy to follow and didn't drag out so it was super useful. Very keen for the next set.

I am no longer a noob when it comes to ahk, I managed to create my own rpa script for work around (3000 lines of code), however I am always looking to learn more about RPA, I started out with simple commands, then I expanded to ocr and image search, combined with if then statements and finally I was able to get a few COM commands up and running for my work, can you please provide an example of the RPA portion of the course as I don't really need to learn about the basics of ahk as much! Thanks!

The course is an "intro to AutoHotkey" thus there was nothing complex in it. I suggest you look at my site https://the-automator.com. Specifically you can learn about Web scraping, API calls, and using Excel.

I’m having trouble understanding the provided tutorial. This may be for me.. perhaps the intro may be all I need?

Let me ask you. I’m not looking to create lines and lines of code. I am looking for simple tasks... at least what seems simple.

For example.. make a simple Keyboard keystroke T rapid fire T with a delay while keeping my mouse functionally and not locking up my computer. Etc.

Is this course for me? Or a start? I’m not looking for anything complex.

@adrenalinskr Awesome! A friend and I also have a course on HotStrings. They're amazingly helpful and pretty easy to pick up. I intro them in this course but dive deep in the specific one.

Hi hasantr,
Sadly I don't use classes. When I get the time I might start to tackle them. I think the syntax isn't that hard. It's the use cases that I just don't have a need for... (or at least I don't think I do)

I don't understand your opinion that there is little educational resources on AHK. If you view the Tutorials section of this forum, there is material and links. To include material on Classes and OOP. Maybe you are thinking about AHK books or AHK video series, but those exist too.

Of course Joe Glines does an excellent job of helping people who are new to AutoHotkey understand complicated concepts and how to apply AutoHotkey in various ways, so I can understand you favoring his content.

Classes and OOP is very much optional versus necessary. I think some people feel it's necessary, because other programming languages "force" the object-oriented paradigm. Arguably, Java and C# do this. But that's not the case with other languages, like Object Pascal or Lua, for example. In various other programming languages, to include AutoHotkey, the choice is way more optional and a programmer can get along quite well without the OOP paradigm and Classes or use it "partially" when it suits their purposes.

I think knowing and understanding Classes and OOP is more of an advantage when you are reading the code from other programming languages that "forces" it's use, because of using or borrowing code from other programmers that use it, or when in a corporate setting that mandates it's software developers use it.

Thanks SOTE! :) I'm doing my best to get people started on AutoHotkey and working smarter, not harder. Regarding your other comment, I agree, Classes are good to know, but optional. To me, learning how to use Functions is an amazing game-changer but classes will be more helpful for advanced users.

You are absolutely right. You don't have to be Udemy to have education. I'm learning everything here. I think I should be ashamed of this. I feel ungrateful. A little drunk learning. I couldn't learn another language. Because I couldn't write code. You can write code with AHK. Because the entire community is a great tutorial.
