It was mainly a networking issue. No hacks, we had an unexpected server shutdown that likely reset some settings. The main thing is that I had only access to the main server and occasional to the secondary one so I dont know why, but it never occurred to me if we had tried the fixes from the main server on to the secondary one
I don't know if what I did is actually "the" fix per se, but the site is definitely very speedy now!
