20200605 Nederland 'zwarte piet' / ' Black Pete '
https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/world/netherlands-george-floyd-protests-racism-black-face-12808778
AMSTERDAM: Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said his attitude towards "Black Pete", a figure from pre-Christmas
celebrations that has been criticised as a racist caricature, had undergone "great changes" in recent years.
Rutte said his view had changed since 2013, when he said: "Black Pete is just black and I can't do much about that."
Now he expects the tradition to disappear.
He was speaking on Thursday (Jun 4) in a parliamentary debate about anti-racism protests in the Netherlands held in solidarity with demonstrations in
the United States after the death in police custody of George Floyd, an unarmed black man in Minneapolis.
In the Dutch tradition, St Nicholas brings gifts to kids accompanied by numerous "Petes", clownish servants usually portrayed by white people in black face paint wearing frizzy wigs and red lipstick.
The tradition is already changing. Some celebrations feature Black Petes with dabs of paint on their cheeks, representing soot from the chimneys he is said to climb down to deliver presents.
Others include multicoloured Petes, dropping the word "black" from the name.

To put these two quotes in relation feels like a stretch, especially if you happen to quote George Orwell :D - a few comments (just in case this comparison was meant seriously ;) ).

I wasn't aware that Twitter is a government - but they seem to start to resist a tiniest bit to a powerful government that tries to make its own use of language into the centre of a culture war.
I mean, the company's decision is literary the opposite of (what many people imagine) socialism would look like. After all, it's a free market choice, if Twitter wants to change its own usage of language.

Re Orwell's positions:
Spoiler

Whatever you think of Twitter's exact plans (or Orwell's views), I don't buy that it will limit free speech, or be the end of free thought.
(Python already dropped the master/slave terminology in 2018 - and still, we lived. ;) )

i wasnt commenting on the twitter platform directly.. that list was from their engineering team, probably for their internal docs and codebase. certainly they aren't going to censor their users who tweet on their platform (yet?)

i was commenting more on the culture war, that they've fallen prey to, with the orwell reference as the likely end game if this nonsense isn't curbed

I see Twitter Engineering’s announcement as a reflection of cultural language shifts that have been occurring for decades (centuries, actually) and is recently accelerating due to the Black Lives Matter movement getting much more focus for obvious reasons. Although many denounce the effect “political correctness” has had on the language, I think most people cringe when they look back at some terminology that was commonly used decades ago. Certainly in the US, our language has changed as civil rights advances have been made.

It may be a little jarring to see new terms starting to replace old ones, but it’s happening organically, even if it’s being driven by those that some may think are too sensitive or reactionary. It’s still occurring as a result of changing societal norms, not imposed by a ruling class. The society depicted in 1984 (which I read some time before 1984) would have rejoiced at having some ability to choose the terms they use. If Twitter were to adopt policies that were considered too out of step, it’s the general population that would cry foul (as guest3456 and certainly others are doing), not the government. That’s a good thing. The same goes for those that are applauding the announcement. Yes, it’s a cultural war of sorts, and open debate is a positive. Unfortunately lately, people are getting so dug in that they won’t listen to anyone that doesn’t reinforce their own views. Hopefully that’s a temporary phenomenon of getting used to the advent of social media and greater access to non-traditional media outlets.

Having said that, I do think we have to be careful of the “cancel culture” posing too harsh of penalties on individuals for what might be seen as transgressions in the changing landscape, especially when looking back at things said or done years ago. Everything needs to be taken into the context of the times. And as things change, we should realize that not everyone changes at the same speed, and current actions should be judged with that in mind. Expecting everyone to have the same degree of “wokeness” can be dangerous.

Every social media platform already applies its own terms of services on a daily basis, but currently these terms are applied unevenly. If your utterances are deemed "newsworthy", you get a pass.
If you look at how Twitter's engineering team came to these new policies, you can see that their process was started months ago by Black employees, and just was accelerated by recent events. I don't see how you could curb that, if they have the support of Twitter's leadership and key advertizers - except by cutting freedoms of speech - politically. So everyone should be careful what they wish for.
After all, cancel culture is really nothing that is limited to the so-called woke people. I am old enough to remember (conservative) people blowing up their Keurigs or burning their sneakers, or even people throwing hissy fits at the supermarket over wearing a mask, meant to protect the freedom and health of others.

To quote Rev. Peter Marshall, former US Senate chaplain:
May we think of freedom, not as the right to do as we please, but as the opportunity to do what is right.

In this case here, my point was mainly that using quotes from fictional sources - completely ripped from historical, political, literary and personal context - feels like fanning the conflict even more. It doesn't prove anything and feels at best random and wildly exaggerated, if not taken straight from the online culture warrior's meme repository.

PS: That said, I personally wouldn't like to see this culture war extended to these forums. Of course, it can be discussed, like seen here, but aren't there already enough (too many) online and offline battlefields?

For the love of god you can't tell me that saying allowlist instead of whitelist limits your ability to express yourself or criticize twitter.
If anything saying allowlist is expanding your options and freedom since it is removed from the racist- undertones white and blacklist contains.

I don't actually think you want to defend those racist undertones either.
Do you just not want to change? When such a change as it is presented here happens suddenly it can seem a bit scary.
But it will still take a long time until the natural process of it changing happens. So don't be afraid of that.

Still I don't see how removing the words "Master/Slave" could make a workplace more inclusive.
People have to have and use a lot of freedom in shaping their own private lifes to make this specific term a concern.

Disclaimer: not saying I am for or against, as I don't believe I want to discuss politics here. :? :? :?
but in terms of black or white, lightness and darkness, I think historically... it is religious in nature, as it possibly relates as to whether or not there is "a lack of [God's] light." ?

Perhaps blocklist and rightlist are a homonymic-ish compromise, albeit perhaps inappropriate. :?

How to view the locusts in 3D or Augmented Reality (AR)
You can view and explore the 3D locusts on your desktop or mobile device. For the full AR experience you will need a mobile device. The AR experience uses the latest technology and may need an updated version of your browser. We can't guarantee it will work on all browsers.
