Or AHK Discord server (see link at the top of the page) has an active offtopic general chat channel (and also programming and gaming offtopic (non-AHK) channels) - if that's what you are asking for.

-- At least six dead, dozens injured in 130-car pileup on icy Texas interstate
At least six people are dead and dozens more were injured in a massive pileup on an icy Texas interstate that involved more than 130 vehicles Thursday morning, officials said.
"This is a major catastrophe in our city," Fort Worth fire spokesman Mike Drivdahl said of the ice-related crash.

-- Texas power outage: Why natural gas went down during the winter storm | The Texas Tribune
Texas largely relies on natural gas — especially during times of high demand — to power the state.
Experts say natural gas infrastructure, from pumping it out of the ground to the plants in city centers, was unprepared for the plunging temperatures brought by the winter storm.

Basically, Texas has its own grid to avoid dealing with — you guessed it — the feds.
But grid independence has been violated a few times over the years — not even counting Mexico's help during blackouts in 2011.

Texans running low on food are finding empty grocery store shelves.
Food pantries are running out of supplies.
And the freeze has wiped out substantial portions of the state's citrus and vegetable crops.

Houston — The winter weather emergency in Texas and much of the South is getting worse, with millions facing yet another night in the dark with no heat and no clean water.
This relentless winter blast is blamed for at least 24 deaths this week.
One-third of Americans are in the path of a second winter storm, with the snow and ice headed to the East Coast.

This was a long time coming. Fry's started shutting down stores in August 2019. At the same time (and before), they stopped restocking inventory in some of the stores in order to save money. I remember going to one of the stores in August 2019. The store was open but the shelves were almost bare. I asked one of the few people there if they were having a "going out of business" sale? He said no. He tried to assure me that they were going to restock but I don't think that he believed it. The little that was left on the shelves was still at full price so there was no incentive to do any bargain shopping. I never went back. At the time, the message boards used by Fry's employees were full of speculation. Management was telling them little or nothing. I think COVID killed Fry's but they were dying already.

For me, Fry's demise (as was Radio Shack's) is another symptom of America's apparent mission to "Stop Making Things" (with companies like Boeing being on a sub-mission, "Stop Making Things that Don't Go Bump in the Night").

Where does the budding tinkerer sans internet access and a bank account physically go to buy resistors, capacitors, inductors, ICs, breadboards, soldering irons and the like? (Granted there are a few places scattered around the larger metro areas. There is a Grainger's where I live, for example.) What effect does the lack of readily available parts have on a young inventor's willingness to experiment?

When I was a kid I didn't need an online search (good thing too, since the TVs still had vacuum tubes) to know where to go to find parts for a project. Radio Shack was the Port of Last Resort since the parts were so expensive, and even my little town (pop. under 30,000) had a few places where you could shop for electronic parts, but everybody still spent time and money at Radio Shack anyway. Tubes for the TV? I could buy them - and even test them - in the grocery store!

Where would a kid right now in Anywhere, USA, pop. 50,000, go to buy an op-amp? A 555 timer? Say the kid wanted to clone a Vox AC-30 - schematics, online, no problem! But parts - what - order and pray? By the time the parts arrive (likely a while since many would have to originate in China) the kid might have decided cloning a Marshall would be more fun.

Redmond (dpo) - Windows is finally going green:
there is now an update available for Microsoft’s Windows 10 which will introduce waste separation to domestic computers for the first time.
Environmentalists have long criticised the fact that all computer files are disposed of in the same recycle bin regardless of format.
In the updated version, five differently coloured containers are visible on the desktop instead of that one notorious recycle bin.
There is one each for photographs, videos, sound files, text files and general waste.
....
However, some especially toxic files cannot be recycled.
These include computer viruses, GILF porn videos and Justin Bieber music.
Users can no longer dispose of these via a click on the desktop.
Instead, they must be saved to a USB stick and sent on by post to Microsoft’s hazardous waste management centre.

In last week's episode of New Amsterdam, one of the doctors breaks down in the middle of shooting a hospital promo to express the same fears that many people are experiencing during the pandemic. I thought it was worth watching.
