Guest posting

17 Oct 2013, 04:48

I realise it is early days for this new forum, congrats btw, but I think one of the appeals of the old forum by Chris was that Guest posting was allowed (e.g. no need to create an account). It really makes it very easy for people to ask questions (yes I realize about spammers, trolling and extra work for admins & mods, confusions about who is who in a thread etc). I answered many questions in the Support section as Guest at the time as well and I'd like it back.

I think it could be one of those things that sets this new forum aside of the .com forum and it helped to grow the community grow in the old days.

(I just registered as guest as an inside joke, if real Guest posting is allowed this Guest account can be deactivated of course, or you can perhaps set "Anonymous" as default Guest name for posting)

i think Chris mentioned at one point that a lot of modifications were made to phpbb to keep the spam to a minimum. it really did work well.

Those were phpBB2 mods and would not work with v3 anyway ( without alterations )..
.. and those mods were one of the primary reason holding him up from upgrading to V3.
David ( MacroMan! ) had listed them in Developers section, but that section is not accessible anymore.

I don't remember which thread it was, but the code for the phpBB modifications was never posted on the forums, for security reasons. There was just a list of what all the modifications did. MacroMan! had the actual code, at one time. I don't know whether he would still have it.

I meant to say the same.

I had tried to contact him through the last known email address, but it seems to be dead.

Thanks for allowing guest posts! I just noticed that for Guests bbcode is turned OFF, I don't know if that is done on purpose or if it is accidental. Code and/or Gist tags would be nice to avoid long sections of code. Ciao!
