A transição é iminente.
Tudo a depender do observador..
... Second Engine burning... seco-2 cut-off ...
uou... its happening...

By the Way.... no que é mais fácil acreditar?

I think the Earth is a flat balloon)))
But seriously, this is a very silly discussion, if you ask me. You can't change the minds of flat-earthers, and people who know how to think understand everything.)

I think it's a bit embarrassing to be discussing this in the 21st century. There are hundreds of satellites orbiting the Earth, and even NASA has developed an application for you to watch them live. You may not trust institutions or organizations like these, which is normal, but there are other ways to learn about this. For example, in the picture below, you can see electric propellers standing on top of the sea.

Image

Of course, this is just an optical illusion. The reason we see it this way is related to the fact that the Earth is round. In fact, it is not globe/flat/round, its scientific name is referred to as a Geoid.

In addition, buy an angle measurer and go to a seaside like in the picture. Align the center of the angle measurer with the end line of the sea. You will clearly see that they are not on the same plane. This test is a realistic example that proves the Earth is not flat.

If your thoughts have not changed on this issue, I recommend reading different opinions on Quora.

Large language models (LLMs) are eerily human-like:
in casual conversations, they mimic humans with near-perfect fidelity.
Their language capabilities hold promise for some fields — and spell trouble for others.
But above all, the models’ apparent intellect makes us ponder the fate of humanity.
I don’t know what the future holds, but I think it helps to understand how often the models simply mess with our heads.

Flat Earth vs. Globe Earth.

Is the debate between the Flat Earth theory and the Globe Earth theory still relevant in today's society, and how does this discussion intersect with the technical and programming focus of this forum?

That’s why the sub-forum is named “Off-topic discussion.”

Absolutely! There are many more people than you think - and their numbers appear to grow - that still believe the earth is flat. The topic is relevant not because there is any merit to the "flat earthers'" claims but because, in spite of the overwhelming evidence, there are people willing or are coerced / manipulated to ignore that evidence. They join the large number of holocaust deniers, anti-vaxxers, and those, for instance, who believe that the coup attempt on January 6th did not happen ... (this unfortunately shapes the political landscape in the US today).
Perversion and ignorance, both fueled by powerful propaganda machines, are pervasive and remain enormously relevant.

Why yes, of course!

The debate is important not solely because of flat-earthers but also because of those people that have simply settled for the globe shape as a "definitive" shape. Knowledge about gravity, spacetime distortion and etc is quite old now and it baffles me to see how suposedly "rational beings" have not yet moved forward in their vain attempts to shape huge celestial bodies in 3D based on their limited sensorial organs (eyes), which simply cannot translate that the light reaching their retinas has traveled through a SPACETIME WHICH WAS CURVED INTO ANOTHER DIMENSION (NOT TO X, NOT TO Y AND NOT TO Z!), therefore the perceived image when looking at a planet/star is simply NOT correct for shaping it (and the shape in fact cannot even be corrected in 3D).

Regarding the "technical and programming focus" of this forum, the discussion, despite being mostly offtopic, CAN BE IMPORTANT in the event a programmer will have to deal with the intricacies of translating raw satelite signals to calculate GPS coordinates. This may look very case-specific but it is important to notice that flat-earth thinking IS accurate for small distances whereas accounting for spacetime distortion IS necessary for accurate calculation in long distances, so there is actually almost NO CASE where globe-earth thinking results in truly accurate calculations (hence it is basically the most useless view of the 3).

I can empathize with @Ernestheili's point, so I'll play the devil's advocate for a bit.

This thread "feeds the trolls" by simply mentioning the idea. No matter how you attempt to disprove it, giving more attention to the "debate" lends it more credibility and further propagates it. Debating a flat earth makes it seem like it is worthy of being considered as an potential alternative. It's even worse that people in positions of power on this forum, admins and mods, created this thread and bump it. Perhaps that's why Ernestheili originally posted in another topic, since bumping this thread is undesirable.

The percentage of the population that may actually believe in a flat earth, despite the preponderance of evidence to the contrary, is so low that you could argue fighting against them is meaningless and absurd.

I'm not entirely convinced that this thread is counterproductive, for the reasons mentioned above by all the smart forum members. But at the same time, it does a non-zero amount of damage by giving it a platform to spread.

I don't disagree. Falsehoods are also not eradicated by continually discussing them as an alternative to the truth. I was playing the devil's advocate because there is nuance. This thread is basically a lot of very good arguments in favor of science. If we are arguing against an insignificant minority we should consider that simply by acknowledging the other side of the "debate", we are lending credence to it. I don't know where the balance should lie. The thought that it should not occupy a prominent position on this forum is worth considering.
