search the old forum

Post by jeeswg » 04 Jul 2017, 18:42

Over time I've come to realise that the old forum is still really useful. And it would be useful to be able to search it better.

E.g. on this forum you can list all the threads that a user is in, it would be useful to do that for the old forum as well:
AutoHotkey Community - Search
https://autohotkey.com/boards/search.ph ... mit=Search

I could put this into Google for example, but it's not as effective:
site: https://autohotkey.com/board Chris "10727 posts"

==================================================

I've learnt a lot by going over the old changelogs, and I think it would be good if they were on the new site somewhere. Also, they are interesting when considering changes for AHK v2.

[AutoHotkey v1.1 2008-]

I'm worried generally about good things that may only be available at Internet Archive. These 2 might deserve a home somewhere too:

http://www.autohotkey.net/~faqbot/faq.html

==================================================

Btw it's charming to see the original forum again (are we on the 3rd at the moment?). Is the content still available for it, obviously it would be nice, but it's not critical.

This is to my knowledge, "technically" the third forum. :/

4th
Poly first upgraded to PHPBB3 then changed to IP BOARDS
those 2 transitions occured on the same threads. There has been only 1 complete start over

Interesting.

Btw, it appears that the oldest threads are still available #CelebrateGoodTimes:

Threads like Machine Bit Wizardry are in the capable hands of Google at present- But for how long?
They cannot be lost!

For now, yes. They are 10 y.o. threads. Will there ever be put in place a cutoff date before selected content => WaybackMachine/Archive.org etc?
In fact nvm, those sites do a great job of spidering the archived content viz. the OP - before Archive.org there was nothing. Things just vanished into the ethereal bitbucket without trace. Like the Oldblivion forums, for instance.

- Btw I did mention earlier, key content that may not currently appear on autohotkey.com but that is on the archive.org forums, including the older changelogs.
- Some of the old versions of AutoHotkey v1.1 that were available to download on archive.org, are no longer available there.
- AFAIK all old forum posts are currently available on autohotkey.com, in the archived version of the forum, although I do not know if there are some special/older posts or forums that aren't there.

The old forum will remain for as long as this site exists. We will eventually have to upgrade to PHP 7 which will force me to put it on a separate server because that forum software cannot be upgraded. But so long as i maintain this site it will continue to have off server backups and keep the archived forum in its entirety

@tank - wouldn't it be possible to "flatten" the old forum, run something like httrack on it to transform database+php to pure html - no database and php needed. httrack will/should translate all "php" links to "html" links - you can then also do some batch editing on the html files so you can remove the IP Boards drivel (copyright statement etc) - you're left with a ton of html files of course, but once uploaded you never have to enter the directory again - and you keep a local copy of the database just in case you do manage to translate it to phpbb3 someday.

Its an MVC and there is alot that happens under the hood to make navigation occur
Not saying it isnt possible but its not as simple as it sounds

Encountered slightly bizarre behaviour of links in the archives, e.g.
SKAN's link here to a post by Chris is:
www.autohotkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=71165#71165
Not found. There is a short answer by Chris in Ask for Help with the correct title:
www.autohotkey.com/board/topic/10566-hiwords-and-lowords/?p=66655
The thread id 71165 in the broken link can be paired with the post title, but produces a completely different and newer thread:
https://www.autohotkey.com/board/topic/71165-hiwords-and-lowords/
Are all of the original posts in the Internet Archive? The AHK search phps there are bricked. For example, this snapshot from 22 July 2006 has most of the Scripts and Functions, but none of the Ask for Help threads show. Not sure how the IA snapshots work, either, as the snapshot shows a large number of threads in the forums after the snapshot date.

It possible that the forums got re-index at some point. As the search, do no use it. I believe that both the search and entire login system is disabled or broken.
