i think it would be nice to change(if at all possible) the quote tags' html/css to get rid of some of these line breaks. i dont see why theyre needed.
if im replying to someone and i want to quote on a sentence/fragment basis, i must avoid the hyperlinked quote like the plague(2 wasted lines per quote) and instead use uncited quotes(1 wasted line per quote, better but still far from ideal), which needlessly bloats the post

Perhaps the themes can be edited, if more people feel strongly about it - at least, there are already differences in different themes, afaics.
The 'Digi' theme already uses just one header line (like your modified Simplicity quote) for the hyperlinked quote (- but still one empty line for the other one).

Yes, I've noticed this too. I thought it was just the newline breaks after a bbcode tag.
