AutoScriptWriter Download?

Post by jj306 » 12 Dec 2019, 16:33

I can't find where to download AutoScript Writer. When I search Program Files > AutoHotkey the ScriptWriter is not present, only the main Hotkey program.

Here is a picture of what it should like (I stole this screenshot from a youtube video)

How can I download this for Windows 10?

That's not packaged with AHK anymore. Perhaps it's available if you were to install the old version (1.0+ as opposed to 1.1+) of AHK, which you can find here. There may be some other places to find it online, but download it at your own risk.

I've checked that page but overwhelmed with options. How would I find the right file from that list?

Starting with the most recent zip file, download it, and see if it's in there.

I did that and found it in the first file I checked: AutoHotkey104805.zip

Hello,

with my Lenovo Notebook with Windows 10 64-Bit Version 2004 Build 19041.630 AutoScriptWriter doesn't work. I get always the message "ASWHook.dll DLL load ERROR" (Autohotkey 1.1.00.00, AutoScriptWriter 2.0.0.0 05/01/2004, ASWHook.dll 03/10/2003).

With Version 1511 I had no problems.

Many Greetings, Merry Christmas and happy New Year :xmas:

ASWHook.dll doesn't seem AHK-related. Googling indicates that it is part of Avast Antivirus or AVG AntiVirus. So I don't know why AutoScriptWriter would even try to load this DLL (or probably any DLL)... but who knows - haven't used AutoScriptWriter since that one time 15 years ago 🤷‍♂️ and I don't know its source code. But it seems odd for sure.

Of course, antivirus programs can cause problems with AHK - but that wouldn't explain that error message either. So what are you exactly doing to get this error message? are you trying to start an antivirus via an AHK script (which you recorded with AutoScriptWriter) ? Perhaps a permisssions issue...

There are a number of scripts out there that can replace a lot of what AutoScriptWriter was doing. You might want to try Mouse And Keyboard Macro Recorder by FeiYue. Written in AutoHotkey. https://www.autohotkey.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=34184&p=159538

Couldn't the Pulover Macro Creator do it all better?

Pulover Macro Creator is of course very good and something to recommend too. In fact, hoping Pulover Macro Creator evolves more along RDA/RPA lines. Jumping to Pulover Macro Creator, a non-programmer or casual might have a bit more of a learning curve (compared to AutoScriptWriter), but be exposed to a much wider range of AutoHotkey capability.

AutoScriptWriter was an easy to use tool that pulls non-programmers and casuals into automation programming. It also provides a clear pathway to recording actions and seeing corresponding code (though the style shown is quite basic and a bit dated now). I thought the FeiYue script (Mouse And Keyboard Macro Recorder) was a closer replacement and easier transition. But you can't go wrong with using either AHK script.

Hello,

l have deactivated Avast Free Antivirus. But this has no effecet on the message ""ASWHook.dll DLL load ERROR".

I used AutScriptWriter to simplify the writing of Scripts for programs with a GUI like DVBViewer. So I could take the mouse actions from AutoScripotWriter.

It seems there was actually a file called ASWHook.dll included with the AutoScriptWriter.exe by Larry Keys, but that DLL from 2003 has probably nothing to do with Avast. ASW stands most likely for AutoScriptWriter and is probably used for hooking the keyboard or something similar. After all, AHK was just forked from AutoIt in 2003 and didn't have all the built-in capabilities of later versions. Afaics, AWS wasn't even open source.

But no idea what the problem might be with Win10-2004. I had problems updating Win10 and are still behind... On my Win10 (64bit) version, AWS 2.0.0.0 still seems to work.
Perhaps it's time to finally move on to a more up-to-date script recorder, like suggested above, if you really need one. (I mean, you could probably set up a virtual machine with some older Windows version and record your scripts there with AWS, if you are not ready to move on).

Btw, did you make sure that you actually have the ASWHook.dll file in your AutoScriptWriter folder ? Perhaps it has been deleted by your antivirus - or you didn't copy it to your new (?) computer?
You can find the DLL in this download, if you don't have it anymore: https://www.autohotkey.com/download/1.0/AutoHotkey104805.zip

Hello,

1. ASWHook.dll:

ASWHook.dll is always there in the AutoSriptWriter subdirectory. It has the same date and size as the files in the linked archive. By the way I had copied the AutoScriptWriter files already again from the AutoHotkey Site.

2. Mouse And Keyboard Macro Recorder by FeiYue:

This Script doesn't work! When I start the code in the first posting, I'll get the message:

Error at line 67:
The following variable name contains an illegal charakter "s:"
The program will exit.

I don't know what that means. I had always problems with the variables in AutoHotkey. The conventions are not so clearly as in C.

Based on the error message, I guess is that you are running an AHK version that is older than version 1.1.09.00 from November 7, 2012.
To use the recorder you'll probably need an even newer version ;) The latest would be v1.1.33.02.

Hello gregster,

thanks a lot! I'll try it.

With the actual version (64 bit) the script works. But the AutoScriptWrite still shows the message "DLL load ERROR"

Hello,

I've tried AutoHotkey_L 1.1.00.00, AutoHotkey Unicode 32-Bit 1.1.33.10 and AutoHotkey Unicode 64-Bit 1.1.33.2.

The error message DLL load error appears with all of them when I click on Record in AutoScriptWriter II V 2.0.0.0.

I use a Lenovo notebook with the latest Windows 10 64-bit.

Many greetings

Luke_Scriptwalker

PS Now I almost think I should try the very old version of my XP notebook. In any case, the script writer worked with that. And I miss a Smiley for "It's a mystery" :?

To be clear, my recommendation to use using a newer AHK version was related to running feiyue 's script.

AutoScriptWriter is an old exe-file (2004) that probably needs an old dll file (2003) in order to work (create year 2004 AHK code). It is a 32-bit application (which might still run on 64bit Windows 10, or perhaps not). It doesn't depend on a specific AHK version installed, because it's an independent executable.

But you will only find it in quite old AHK packages. I just downloaded the v1.0.48.05 zip version (linked above); it has that exe (and dll) in a subfolder called 'AutoScriptWriter'.
Again, you don't have to install AHK from that package, because AWS is an executable anyway.

Then I tried to run it, and it still seems to work on my Win10.0.19045 (64-bit) which should be the 22H2 version from October 2022. At least it started, and I could record something, by pressing 'Record', and clicking around randomly.

Then, for testing, I deleted the dll file from the AWS directory, and ran AWS again. The GUI still showed, but when I pushed Record, I got 'DLL load Failed'.

So I would conclude, AWS still works on the recent WIn10 64 bit, but that dll needs to be there in the same folder.
I got AWS with its DLL from the AHK v1.0.48.05 zip version, and ran it. I just unzipped it from there. I didn't install that old AHK version, because it wouldn't matter.

Hello,

the v1.0.48.05 zip version linked above doesn't work too.

I always had the two files AutoScriptWriter.exe and ASWHook.dll in the AutoScriptWriter subdirectory.

A slightly older W-10 64-bit notebook, used for DVB-Recording with DVBViewer, runs v1.0.47.6. And that's where the ScriptWriter works. I downloaded this version and it doesn't work on this computer either. However, the other computer has not been updated for a long time because there were problems with the giant updates.

Many greetings
