[Paused] Looking for Volunteers

by joedf
Paused: after a staff discussion we've concluded we will not be adding new languages at the moment.
I will, however, still note names down for potential volunteers.

That said, we are always looking for volunteers with our current languages!

Post a reply here, if you can offer help with moderation in other languages. :+1:

What languages should we support? Criteria need, otherwise we'll explode (figuratively) the forums ahah

We are always looking for additional volunteers to help with the many languages we have.

Current Candidates:
  • Dutch: WalkerOfTheDay, Nextron, roeleboele
  • Arabic: Smile_
  • Hindi: Mandit_Gamer
  • Turkish: raumafu, vSky
  • Indonesian: Bang_Jago
  • Italian: jekko1976

Question (sort of): if it would be mandatory to select your home country with the account registration (AFAIK our American fellows are not that shy waving the flag* wherever possible ), it should be easier to identify such candidates - and if one of those is showing an explicit amount of activity ask him/her directly?
[/brainfart]

* yep, being able to provide flag icons for a users signature (that box to the left of a comment) would be amazing :) so we're able to congratulate our Italian fellows for winning the ESC 2021

We can determine if a possible candidate is good for us. And we can perhaps worry about vetting and etc. later... For now, we need any possible candidates at all to even consider anything.
Generally, I'd say good/neutral history for some time (> 6 months?) and demonstrates professional or native capability of a language?

@Mandit_Gamer - not sure if @SKAN covers that region as well/already?
OTOH, your number of postings isn't really matching with that beforementioned condition(s): "Generally, I'd say good/neutral history for some time (> 6 months?) and demonstrates professional or native capability of a language?" ... @joedf :?:

I don't speak/write Hindi. I'm English.

I think the AHK basics should be another must. And a general feeling for our forum vibe, structure and policies. This would usually require regular participation.

*Sigh* Wanted to mention Avi, but member list isn't working.

Yes, I think @Avi would be a great candidate, but I don't think he's too active on recently.
@SKAN Yes, the minimum number of character to trigger the mention dropdown is 4. You can mention your username, and then change SKAN to Avi

I might be able to help for Dutch. It depends a bit on what is expected. I'm not always able to be online.

Oh okay, glad to see people starting to step up. We'll have to decide languages and how many or if all of them we should support. :geek:

When are you guys going to decide? It appears you have Dutch and Arabic volunteers ready.

If I look at the low activity of some of our already existing foreign language forums, I am still not sure that this is a great idea.
Sure, if there is (close to) zero activity, one guy or girl is plenty - but if there is really some activity, one person is not much.

As an example, our two (rather recently added) chinese moderators are not regularly active anymore - so other forum staff has to look at the chinese posts (with the help of DeepL or Google Translate). That's why I am actually quite glad that the chinese forum is not very active. Same usually happens with russian posts, if the content is not obvious... again, low activty makes it manageable.
(I have at least a rough understanding of the other languages we currently have, but more atomization will surely add up.)

Even if I don't post, that doesn't mean I'm not ready, I connect almost everyday in this forum taking a look around, I can provide 2 hours or more working on this each day and it doesn't bother me at all.
It is up to you anyway, I'm here in case you decided something.

It is a lot of languages... I think Arabic would cool, but yet should we go ahead with this? What's are the pros and cons? Also, I'm curious how big the Arabic ahk user base is...

I think you know the pros of adding a new language support, easier for people to write their questions and understand the answers plus the arabic language is very specific at the meaning, 2 different things can't have the same word to describe them.
but for what I'm thinking with cons, the Arabic ahk user base is small here, I barely meet some of them. I think that is enough reason to not add it (I might be wrong because many users doesn't show their real location).

Letters of arabic language are 28 differents characters, the sense of reading is from right to left not from left to right as it is in English
Here is an example:

Hello World!

It equivalent in arabic

!مرحبا بالعالم
