Is it possible to search for phrase(s)?

Post by DaveT1 » 22 Mar 2021, 06:23

I'm a recent convert to Visual Studio Code also refered to in these forums as vscode and vs code (with and without caps). I want an easy way to find all posts about this editor. But it seems that this is not possible even for one version of the above phrases?

Eg., if I advance search for vs code in topics only, I get results with only vs in the topic, as well as results containing vs code.

Doing the same search for "vs code" gives the same results - ie., using "" does not seem to search for a phrase.

I really want one advanced search term that should look something like ("visual studio code" | "vs code" | "vscode") to find all results that have one or more of those three phrases.

Is this possible? Seems amazing if not.

Thanks for any help.

Possible? Probably, if someone is keen on programming it, and on making it compatible and efficient with our phpBB forum software.
Do you know/are a candidate?

It's likely that there are already alternatives available to the custom search - if they would work for us, would need to be investigated.
If someone wants to dive into it, the phpBB community might be the place to start, for example the docs (https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs) and the phpBB forums (for example, https://www.phpbb.com/search/?q=Fulltext or https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=2453831)

Perhaps our Custom Google search can help in the meantime: https://www.autohotkey.com/search/

I personally get along fine with the current forum search and the Google forums search - depending on what I look for, I choose the one that seems more appropriate.

Thanks @gregster. I'm defo not that person, can barely make a coffee without choking on it ;) .

But you're suggestion seems to work a treat - I searched the forums for vs code and sorted by relevance. This alone seemed to nail most combinations mentioned in my post. I'm sure there'll be less good stuff further down.

Still interesting that adding "" still doesn't do a phrase search! But no matter, thanks for the pointer :bravo:
