Keep it simple! questions about capturing PostMessages, using WinSpector / other

Hi, common q - want to capture PostMessages. Quite common, I imagine.

pictorials dead

Have lots of spy...exe tools, been struggling for too long to begin the process.

Found useful info here - https://www.autohotkey.com/docs/misc/SendMessage.htm

(I've used notepad, instead of outlook)
Press the 'filter all' button and then dbl click 'wm_command' on the list on left. This way you will only monitor this message.

I've been trying to follow this https://autohotkey.com/board/topic/3094 ... /?p=197254
ie - get command messages from paint (like, observe the PostMessage Select 620 in paint, as it is sent... )

how do I winspect?? ie post messages?

TASK - capture msg (postmessage?) in paint - select tool
expected result - 620

TEST - observe a message
(in selected window's process)

Open Winspector Spy and a "New Message" window.
Drag the crosshair from Winspector Spy's window to "New Message" window's titlebar (the portion not covered by Winspector Spy's overlay).
Right click the selected window in the list on left and select 'Messages'.
Right click the blank window and select 'Edit message filter'.
Press the 'filter all' button and then dbl click 'wm_command' on the list on left. This way you will only monitor this message.
Now go to the "New Message" window and select from its menu bar: Insert > Picture.

Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong? Or point me to a guide that is substantial and ideally isn't textual based ?

Thanks
