I thought it might be the keyboard. it is a cheap usb keyboard
But it works fine when I plug it into my laptop

update
the problem manifests mostly when I type at normal speeds.
If I enter the keys one at a time, I do not get so many extras.
I tried a minimal Windows diagnostic boot. (safe mode)
I still get the problem typing at a dos prompt in safe mode.
Which suggests a problem with rollover handling in the keyboard.
Which does not explain why it works fine on the laptop.
I've wanted a better keyboard anyway, so I ordered a Corsair.
Hope that makes a difference.

Did you check the Control Panel for keyboard setting, particularly the repeat rate setting?

And is this explicitly related to AHK? Does it only happen when an AHK script is running?

Sorry not to respond earlier... I've been a bit distracted.
The problem went away as mysteriously as it started, with no obvious reason.

Yes I had looked at the keyboard settings, and everything else I could think of, without finding anything odd.
But note that it was not repeating characters I typed, it was generating various characters of its own.

No it was not specific to AHK, it was a system-wide problem that manifested even at a command prompt with
no AHK scripts active at all. I asked here simply hoping someone had encountered such a thing and could help.
