Hotstring Manager

Create and manager hotstrings in an easy-to-understand dialog.

The dialog also acts as an easy 'Help' to list all the hotstrings.

Usage is pretty intuitive from the Button labels.

  Hotkeys
  • WIn+H - Open Main Dialog
  • Win+Space - Space without triggering preceding Hotstring
  • Win+Ctrl+Space - Toggle Hotstrings On and Off

Can also Save and Load hotstring files. The Save is in standard hotstring format. The Load only handles a file with only standard hotstrings that are on one line that could be created with Hotstring Manager.

Settings and dialog positions are saved in an 'ini' file. Hotstrings are saved in a 'sav' file. Backups are created for both when overwriting.

The "X" option for Run does not work.
Could you implement it?
For ex.
:X:ntp::run "notepad.exe"
it was easy to do this manually with the script provided in the help file (I just had to replace the T with the X ignore warning and reload the script).

However, as this forum is used by people from all over the world, I am sure there are many people who use more than one keyboard layout. Especially those whose first language is not in Latin script. These people (including me) will need to use the Windows default shortcut to switch keyboard layouts, which is WIN + SPACE.

For those familiar with AHK scripts, it is not a problem to change the shortcut keys themselves, but many new users will try some of the scripts posted on the forums and find that they can no longer switch keyboard layouts.

You might expect them to POST articles asking about it, but in most cases they won't. They will quietly assume that AHK is full of bugs and leave LOL.

Most easy hotkey combinations are already used by something. Windows and it standard programs surely have over a hundred. I have about 50 AHK ones. I often have to overwrite a lesser used hotkey every time I create a new hotkey. I mean Win+H, that I use to open Hotstring Manager, is overwriting the "Open dictation feature" of Windows, which is actually pretty cool, but I never really use it.

I do try to organize my scripts, so they are easier to understand. Mostly for my own benefit when I go to edit them down the road. So it should be pretty easy to find the hotkeys to modify.

I view the AutoHotkey Forum as a community to learn and exchange knowledge about AutoHotkey coding, not as a repository for freeware.

How to define a Hotkey is literally the very first thing explained with an example in the Help file. #z::Run "https://www.autohotkey.com" ; Win+Z

If you have a suggested code modification and how to implement it that might benefit other users, feel free to post it. I have no idea what hotkey combination would be better for people that switch keyboard layouts. Shift+Space, Ctrl+Space, Win+Space, and Alt+Space are all already assigned something by Windows.

First of all, many thanks for posting this! I stumbled over this post as I was researching how to write a popup launcher to quickly search and fire hotkeys. I have too many and I needed a way to quickly search among them and add/edit new ones. This tool was 95% there :bravo:

I made some minor modifications, mainly:

- Added a search field to filter the ListView (search and press Enter to jump to the ListView)
- Since I have some hotkeys that are not self-explanatory I needed a way to add some meta data to the hotkeys for searching (e.g. a category etc.). This was achieved by adding a comment field. It is parsed after the hotstring in the file. I would like to keep my hotstrings in an .ahk file (instead of .sav) to be able to launch the file outside this tool if needed.
- BTW: I changed the popup hotkey to Ctrl + space

Some issues:

- I am struggling to increase the GUI 'canvas size' in the Add/Edit dialogs. I have tried to understand your GuiResizer but I have not been able to understand how to fix this.
- On 'Save Hotstrings' file select in the Settings dialog the filename does not update after selecting a file. I am not sure why this is not working.
- Trying to auto adjust the column widths in the ListView on resize did not work. I tried to make the columns resize relatively to each other but the returned column widths of the ListView were jumping all over the place. I ended up with a dirty hack (a button to resize the comments column...).

Any help in understanding how I can fix the GUI issue would be greatly appreciated.

I been meaning to add a search of some sort. I have several scripts in v1 that have various types of searches including a fuzzy search. I need to adapt some of that code.

The 'Save Hotstrings' button with file select just manually saves the file right then. It does not change the Auto Save/Load Name that is auto saved on script shutdown and auto loaded on script startup. You have to just type the name you want in the Auto Save/Load Name edit field to change this name or extension.

The 'Load Hotstrings' manually and immediately loads a file. Maybe I should change these to Import and Export to avoid confusion with the Auto Save/Load Name.

I have also thought about adding some type of 'category' field to hotstrings. Saving that information as a comment would probably be the way to go.

When I get some time, I will see about adding some additional features to this script. I use this script all the time so it gets the job done but it could still be improved. I spent the most time on the resizing and variable font sizes. Not that it really needed it that much, but I was using this script to learn and test resizing code.

Man this is great! Thanks guys! Superfast too. My autocorrect file has about 5k entries and this thing loads them in just a second or two.

When I tried FantasticGuru's at the top, my first thought was, "add a filter box... and have comments in a separate column." So I was pretty happy to see that Helgel did just that. Helgel, be advised that with yours, the edit GUI needs to be a bit taller.... Adding the commend box pushed the option checkboxes into the buttons at the bottom.

Also, it's unfortunate that accented characters seem to get messed up. Even items with "quotation" marks are messed up. If I create a new item in the tool, that has quotation marks, then run it, it types them correctly. But if I load a pre-exsisting hotsting (which contains them), then they get typed as little rectangles.
